Granite Poultice removes deep-embedded stains and discoloration from kitchen granite countertops and islands. It is specifically formulated to work below the granite’s surface and pull out grease, oil, food, and beverages that have penetrated into the stone’s pores.

DIRECTIONS:

1. Mix the Poultice:

   Combine the Granite Poultice with lacquer thinner (approximately 1 teaspoon per pound of poultice) until it reaches the consistency of cookie dough. (Lacquer thinner can be purchased at local hardware and paint stores).

2. Apply the Mixture:

   Using a rubber, wood, silicone, or plastic spatula, spread the poultice evenly over the stained or discolored surface to a thickness of $1/8$ to $1/4$ inch (roughly the thickness of a pancake).

3. Seal Airtight:

   Cover the poultice tightly with plastic wrap or plastic sheeting, and secure the edges firmly with duct tape. Making the application airtight allows the poultice to maximize its penetration into the stone’s pores and lift out trapped grease, oil, food, and beverages.

4. Allow to Dwell:

   Leave the poultice in place for a minimum of 24 hours. For severe stains, keep it covered for 2 to 3 additional days. A second application may occasionally be required for stubborn discoloration.

5. Remove & Expect Temporary Darkening:

   Scrape away and discard the dried poultice. It is completely normal for the granite to appear darker than usual immediately afterward due to residual moisture trapped in the pores. Normal color, clarity, and gloss will fully return over the next few days as the moisture evaporates.

6. Clean, Seal, and Protect:

   Once dry, clean the area using our NeutraSheen For Granite cleanser. Protect the stone using our Granite Guard Protector SB sealer, and finish by polishing the surface with our Granite Polish and Protector.

PLEASE NOTE:  Granite Poultice is custom made for each order, it has a shelf life of approximately one month, due to one of its main ingredients.

Economical to use, 1 pound of Granite Poultice will restore between 1 and 2 square feet of granite.

How a granite poultice actually works

Scrubbing does not remove a stain that has soaked into stone, because the stain is not on the surface – it is inside the pore structure. A granite poultice works in the opposite direction. You mix it into a paste, spread it over the stain, cover it and leave it. As the paste slowly dries it pulls the moisture out of the stone, and the dissolved stain travels with it into the poultice. When you scrape the dried poultice away, the stain comes with it. The Natural Stone Institute describes the same drawing out principle in its consumer stone care guidance.

What a granite poultice will and will not lift

It is at its best on organic and oil based staining – cooking oil, grease, coffee, tea, wine, fruit juice and the dark rings left by a bottle or a pan. It works on granite countertops, islands, backsplashes and floors.

What it will not do is repair physical damage. A dull patch on a polished surface is not a stain, and a chip or a scratch is not a stain either. If the marked area is dull rather than discoloured, that is an etch or a wear mark and it needs polishing rather than a poultice.

Getting the best result

Patience is the whole method. Give the poultice the full dwell time – deep or old stains often need a second and sometimes a third application, and each one lifts a little more. Do not be tempted to peel the cover off early to check on it, because the drawing action only happens as it dries. Clean the area afterwards with a pH neutral stone cleaner, and once the stone is clean and completely dry, consider sealing it so the next spill does not soak in the same way.

Granite poultice questions we get asked

How many applications will I need? Light stains often come out in one. Old, deep or oily stains commonly take two or three.

Can I use it on marble and other stone? It is formulated for granite. We make a separate poultice for marble.

Will it damage the polish? Used as directed it draws the stain out without abrading the surface.

The mark is dull rather than dark – will this fix it? No. That is etching or wear, not staining, and it needs a polishing product instead.
