DIRECTIONS: Mix the granite poultice with lacquer thinner (approximately 1 teaspoon of lacquer thinner per pound of granite poultice) to the consistency of cookie dough (lacquer thinner can be purchased at hardware and paint stores). Next, use a rubber, wood, silicone, or plastic spatula, to spread the granite poultice over the discolored/stained granite surface to a thickness ranging between 1/8 to ¼ inch (similar to a pancakes thickness). Next, cover the poultice with a plastic wrap or plastic sheeting applied to the granite surface with duct tape; making the granite poultice (airtight) allows the granite poultice to maximize its penetration into the granite pores and pull out grease and oil, plus food and beverages that have stained and discolored the granite surface. Keep the granite poultice in place for a minimum of 24 hours, to do its work; for extremely discolored/stained granite areas it may be necessary to keep the poultice in place for 2 or 3 additional days; and sometimes, a 2nd granite poultice application is necessary.

Next, after removing and discarding the granite poultice, it is quite common for the granite countertop and island to appear darker than normal, this is because moisture from the granite poultice has not fully evaporated out of the granite’s pores; it usually takes a few days for the evaporation process, and the granite’s normal color, clarity, and gloss will be fully restored. After removing and discarding the poultice, use our granite cleaner NeutraSheen For Granite to clean the restored granite area, then seal this granite area with our granite sealer Granite Guard Protector SB, then polish this granite area, with our granite polish Granite Polish and Protector.

Economical to use, 1 pound of Granite Poultice will restore between 1 and 2 square feet of granite.

How a granite poultice 3 lb draws a stain back out

Scrubbing will never remove a stain that has soaked into stone, because the stain is not on the surface – it is down inside the pore structure. A poultice 3 lb works in the opposite direction. Mixed into a paste and spread over the mark, it is covered and left alone. As the paste slowly dries it pulls moisture up out of the stone, and the dissolved stain travels with it into the poultice. Scrape the dried poultice away and the stain comes with it. The Natural Stone Institute describes the same drawing out principle in its consumer stone care guidance.

Is the granite poultice 3 lb the right size for you?

The 1 lb tub is right for a single stain on a single counter. The granite poultice 3 lb tub is the size most people choose once there is more than one mark to deal with, or when a stain is large enough that one application will not cover it. Because deep stains routinely need two or three passes, having enough material to repeat without stopping to re-order matters more than it first appears. If you are working a granite floor or a whole kitchen, step up again to the 5 or 10 pound size.

What a granite poultice 3 lb will and will not lift

It is at its best on organic and oil based staining: cooking oil, grease, coffee, tea, wine, fruit juice and the dark rings left by a bottle or a pan. It works on granite countertops, islands, backsplashes and floors.

What it will not do is repair physical damage. A dull patch on a polished surface is not a stain, and neither is a chip or a scratch. If the mark is dull rather than discolored, that is etching or wear, and it needs polishing rather than a poultice 3 lb.

Getting the best from a granite poultice 3 lb

Patience is the whole method. Give the paste its full dwell time and resist lifting the cover early to check, because the drawing action only happens as it dries. Deep or old stains commonly need a second application and sometimes a third, each one lifting a little more.

Afterwards, clean the area with a pH neutral stone cleaner such as NeutraSheen for Granite, let the stone dry completely, then seal it with a penetrating granite sealer so the next spill does not soak in the same way. Sealing is the step that stops you needing the granite poultice 3 lb again.

How many applications will I need? Light stains often come out in one. Old, deep or oily marks commonly take two or three.

Can I use it on marble? This is formulated for granite. We make a separate poultice for marble and other soft stone.

Will it damage the polish? Used as directed a poultice 3 lb draws the stain out without abrading the surface.

The mark is dull, not dark – will this fix it? No. That is etching or wear, and it needs a polishing product instead.
