Then work with a cleaner that will not damage the stone: something pH neutral such as NeutraSheen for Marble on marble, limestone and travertine, or the granite equivalent on granite. Work in overlapping passes rather than scrubbing one spot, keep the pad damp rather than soaking, and let the swivel do the steering. Rinse the pad out when it loads up; a saturated pad just moves dirt around.

Choosing a pad for the job
Different floors want different pads. A soft pad is right for polished marble, limestone and travertine, where the priority is lifting soil without touching the finish. A more aggressive pad earns its place on textured slate, unpolished granite, quarry tile and grout lines, where the soil sits down in the surface texture rather than on top of it. Keep a couple of each and swap rather than forcing one pad to do both jobs.
Pads are consumables. When a pad stops holding water the way it used to, when the face has matted down, or when you find yourself pressing harder to get the same result, it is finished. Replacing it is faster and cheaper than fighting it.
A routine that keeps stone floors looking new
Sweep or vacuum often – grit is the single biggest cause of wear on a stone floor, and every footstep grinds it into the surface. Damp clean with a neutral cleaner rather than flooding the floor, because standing water finds its way into grout lines and under stone. Deal with spills quickly, particularly anything acidic on marble or limestone. And keep mats at the doors: most of the abrasive material on a floor walks in from outside.
