What a marble refinishing kit is really fixing
The dull patches on a polished marble counter are almost never dirt. Marble, travertine and limestone are calcium carbonate, and anything acidic – wine, citrus, cola, tomato, vinegar, even some household cleaners – physically eats a microscopically rough crater into the polished surface. Light scatters off that roughness instead of reflecting, and you see a cloudy ring or patch. Nothing is sitting on top, which is why scrubbing achieves nothing and why people spend years buying cleaners that were never going to work. The Natural Stone Institute describes the same mechanism in its consumer stone care guidance.
A marble refinishing kit works mechanically instead. Compound, water and a polishing pad re-flatten the damaged layer until the surface reflects evenly again. Because you have re-polished the stone rather than coating it, the result lasts until something etches it again.
Why the SF (Special Formula) version exists
Four marble species will not take a high gloss with standard chemistry: pure white (Thassos), dark brown (Breccia Nouvella), dark green (Verde Antique) and absolute black (Belgium Black). The mineral makeup of those stones needs a different approach, which is what the SF formula provides. If your marble is one of those four, this is the kit you want. If it is not, the standard kit is the right choice and will cost you less.
Working through the marble refinishing kit
Clean and dry the surface first, so you are polishing stone rather than grinding grit into it. Mix the compound with a little water to a slurry and keep it wet the whole way through – a slurry that dries out stops cutting and starts smearing. Work in sections rather than trying to cover a whole kitchen at once, and expect to go round badly etched areas twice. Rinse thoroughly with clean water afterwards.
Finish with the polish and protector stage. That is what gives the restored shine some resistance to the next spill, and skipping it is the most common reason people are back doing the job again sooner than they expected.
Keeping the result
Clean routinely with a pH neutral stone cleaner such as NeutraSheen for Marble rather than a general purpose spray. Use coasters under anything citrus or carbonated, put a board under whatever you are cutting, and blot spills as they happen. Replacement Ultimate Polishing Pads are available separately when yours wear out.
Most kitchens need this once every year or two. A counter that hosts a lot of entertaining may want it more often.
Marble refinishing kit questions we get asked
Do I need experience? No. The kit is designed for homeowners, and the instructions take you through each stage.
Will it work on granite? No. Granite needs different chemistry – see our granite range.
Can I use it in a shower? Yes, on marble shower walls and floors as well as counters and vanities.
How long does it take? Allow an afternoon for a typical bathroom, longer for a kitchen, and work in sections.
