Why a proper grout cleaning brush beats what is under your sink

Most people attack grout with an old toothbrush or a washing up brush, and then conclude that grout cleaner does not work. The problem is usually the brush. A toothbrush covers a few inches at a time, so a bathroom floor takes hours and you give up before the job is done. A washing up brush has bristles too soft and too widely spaced to reach down into a grout line at all – it skims across the tile and never touches the recess where the soil actually is.

Getting the most from it

This is the step almost everyone skips and the one that decides whether the work lasts. Cement grout is porous, which is why it took on the soil in the first place. Restored grout left unsealed is porous again from day one and looks the same within a year. Sealed grout keeps water, food, oil and dirt on the surface where a cloth deals with them – and it means the grout cleaning brush goes back in the cupboard for a long while.

Will it scratch my tile? On hard glazed tile, no. Test an inconspicuous area on anything unglazed or soft.

Can I use it on a shower wall? Yes, and it is much faster than a small brush on vertical tile.

Do I need chemicals as well? A brush alone will not restore discolored grout. The brush is what makes the chemistry reach the joint.

How do I look after it? Rinse it out thoroughly after each use and let it dry bristles down so water drains out.
