Why an instructional DVD still earns its place

Stone and grout restoration is not difficult, but it is unforgiving of a few specific mistakes, and every one of them is easier to understand seen than described. How wet a slurry should be. How much pressure to put on a pad. What “wipe off all excess before it dries” actually looks like on a counter. What a properly restored grout line looks like while it is still damp, so you do not panic and go round again unnecessarily.

A written instruction sheet can tell you to keep the slurry moist. Watching someone do it for thirty seconds tells you what moist means. That is the gap the instructional dvd closes, and it is why it goes in the kits in the first place.

Who buys it separately

Mostly people who already have the products and want to see the technique before committing to a whole weekend, and people who bought a kit some time ago and have misplaced the disc. It is also worth having if more than one person in the household will be doing the work, or if you are doing this on someone else’s property and would rather be sure first.

What to have ready before you watch

It helps to know which job you are doing, because the technique differs. Etch marks on polished marble are a polishing job – see Marble Gloss Restorer. Discolored grout is a restoration and sealing job – see Grout Guard Restorer. A dark mark that has soaked into stone is a stain and needs a poultice. Routine dullness and soil is just cleaning.

Most frustration with stone care comes from using the right product for the wrong problem, and the instructional dvd spends time on telling those problems apart. The Natural Stone Institute also has useful background reading in its consumer stone care guidance.

What the instructional DVD will not do

It will not make a bad product work, and it will not repair chips, cracks or deep gouges – those are jobs for a stone mason. It also cannot judge your particular stone for you: if you have pure white, dark green or absolute black marble, those species need the SF special formula chemistry regardless of technique.
