Porter Cable buffer – a random-orbit power buffer built for smoother, more even results on larger countertop and floor restoration jobs.
Product Facts
The Porter-Cable orbital buffer features a 4.5amp heavy-duty motor and an electronic variable speed with a range between 2500 orbits per minute and 6800 orbits per minute. This option is perfect for larger jobs on marble and granite surfaces such as oversized counter tops and islands, floors, walls, and showers. All in all, the Porter-Cable orbital buffer is an excellent tool for use in your marble polishing and granite polishing projects.
Why a random-orbit design matters
A standard rotary buffer spins in one continuous circle, which can leave faint swirl marks if pressure isn’t kept perfectly even. A Porter Cable buffer uses a random-orbit motion instead, moving the pad in a less predictable pattern that spreads compound more evenly and reduces the risk of swirl marks on polished stone.
What this buffer is suited for
The random-orbit action makes this a strong choice for larger countertop runs and floor sections where a consistent, swirl-free finish matters more than raw cutting speed. It pairs well with our polishing pads and compound matched to your stone type.
Using the Porter Cable buffer
Clean the surface fully first so grit doesn’t get ground in during buffing. Attach a polishing pad, apply compound to the surface or pad, and work in overlapping passes at a moderate speed. The random-orbit motion does the evening-out work, so steady, unhurried passes give the best result.
Keeping the buffer ready to use
Keep the pad attachment area free of dried compound between uses, and store the buffer somewhere dry. A clean attachment surface keeps future pad swaps quick and secure.
Porter Cable buffer questions we get asked
How is this different from a standard rotary buffer? The random-orbit motion reduces the risk of swirl marks, giving a more even finish across larger areas.
What compounds work with it? Any polish or restorer applied via a pad attachment, matched to your stone type – marble, granite, or otherwise.
Is this suited for floors? Yes – it’s well suited to larger countertop and floor sections where an even, swirl-free finish matters.

Pairing the Porter Cable buffer with the right pads
Use it with our polishing pads sized to your floor machine, and our gloss restorer sf compound for marble species that resist a standard polish.
How to run a Porter Cable buffer on stone
Start the buffer at the lowest speed setting with the pad already flat on the surface, then bring the speed up once it is moving. Starting a spinning pad in mid-air throws polish and marks the wall behind you.
Work a small area at a time – roughly two feet square – and let the weight of the machine do the work rather than leaning on it. On marble and granite, extra downward pressure does not speed anything up; it just heats the stone and wears the pad unevenly.
Keep the pad moving in slow, overlapping passes and stop before the polish dries out on the surface. Reapply and keep going rather than pushing a dry pad across the stone.
What else you will need with it
The buffer is the machine, not the whole system. You will also want polishing pads sized for the backing plate and the right restorer chemistry for your stone – our Marble Gloss Restorer for standard polished marble, or the SF special formula for pure white, dark brown, dark green and absolute black marbles that need different chemistry to come up glossy.
For granite, pair the buffer with a granite polish rather than a marble product. The two stone types respond to different abrasives, and using the wrong one usually means a lot of buffing with very little shine to show for it.
Looking after the buffer
Wash pads out after every job and let them dry fully before storing them, and keep the buffer itself away from standing water. Most of the buffers that come back to us early were simply stored damp with polish still caked into the pad.
