Why the disk matters as much as the compound

People think of the polishing compound as the product and the abrasive as an accessory. In practice the disk does at least half the work. It is what holds the slurry against the stone, what carries the compound evenly across the surface, and what decides whether you finish with a uniform result or a patchy one. A worn, loaded or glazed disk will make a perfectly good compound look like it is not working.

This is also why buying a sanding disks 15 pack rather than one or two at a time matters. Abrasives are consumables by design, and swapping in a fresh disk is almost always faster than fighting a spent one for another twenty minutes.

When to change a disk

Change it when the face has glazed over and stopped biting, when it loads up with slurry faster than it used to, or when you notice yourself working an area far longer than the last time you did the same job. A sanding disks 15 pack means you are not stopping a floor halfway through to order more, and you can keep separate disks for aggressive first passes and for finishing.

Using the sanding disks 15 pack on stone

These are hook and loop backed, so they fit straight onto a compatible backing pad on a rotary or orbital machine. Keep the slurry wet the whole way through – a drying slurry stops cutting and starts smearing, which is the most common reason a pass leaves an uneven finish. Work in overlapping passes rather than concentrating on one spot, and rinse the area thoroughly when you are done.

Looking after them between jobs

Rinse each disk thoroughly under clean running water as soon as you finish, before compound has a chance to dry into it. Let them dry completely before storing, and store them flat and out of direct sunlight. Treated well, a disk will see several jobs. Put away damp or loaded with dried compound, it will be useless next time.
