Why grout goes dark and stays dark

Grout is porous cement, and porous cement absorbs whatever touches it – soap scum, coffee, mildew stains, and plain water. Once grout darkens or grays, ordinary cleaning can’t reverse it because the discoloration is inside the material, not on top of it.

Grout is not a surface, it is a sponge. Cement grout is porous and slightly soft, so soil does not sit on top of it waiting to be wiped away – it works down into the body of the grout and stays there. That is why a brush and a household spray cleaner produce a grout line that looks better for a week and then discoloration returns.

A grout guard restorer works differently. It gets into the grout and lifts the embedded soil out of it, which is what restores the original color rather than masking it. On badly built up kitchen grout, pair it with our Grease and Grime Buster: the grout guard restorer breaks the soil down, the fine abrasive carries it off.

How to get a good result

Work in sections rather than trying to do a whole room in one go, and give the product time on the surface instead of scrubbing immediately – most of the work happens while it dwells, approximately 20 to 30 seconds. Keep the area wet as you work, rinse thoroughly, and let everything dry completely before you judge the result, because damp grout always looks darker than it will when dry.

Expect stubborn areas to need a second pass. Grout that has taken ten years to go dark rarely comes back in twenty minutes.

One important caution: this grout guard restorer is formulated for cement grout with manmade tile. If your tile is natural stone: marble, limestone or travertine, use the for marble version instead. Soft, acid sensitive stone needs different chemistry, and the wrong product will etch it permanently. The Natural Stone Institute covers this in its consumer stone care guidance.

Seal it, or you will do this again

This is the step almost everyone skips, and it is the one that decides whether the work lasts. Grout that has been restored and left unsealed is porous again from day one, and it will look the same as it did within a year. Sealed grout keeps food, water, oil and dirt on the surface where a cloth or sponge deals with them.

Keeping grout looking restored

Once sealed, stick to pH-neutral cleaners on tile and grout – harsh acidic cleaners will break down the seal faster than normal wear. Wipe up standing water in showers when you can, since grout that stays wet longer stays vulnerable longer even when sealed.
